Online Therapy: Is It Right for You?

Sep 17
4 min read

Online therapy has made therapy more accessible for many people. Being able to speak to a therapist from home can make it easier to fit counselling around work, family life and other commitments. But convenience isn't the only reason someone might choose to work online.

For some people, talking from their own space can make beginning therapy feel a little less daunting. For others, travelling to a therapy room and meeting face-to-face feels important. There isn't one option that is right for everyone.

At Within Reach Therapy, we offer both online and in-person therapy. Our approach is integrative, which means the way we work is shaped around you as an individual. What matters is finding a way of working that feels comfortable, safe and manageable for you.

Why Choose Online Therapy?

Online counselling can make therapy easier to access when travelling to regular appointments is difficult or simply doesn't fit comfortably around your life. You can attend sessions from your own home or another private space, without needing to factor in travel time.

It can also suit people who feel more comfortable beginning therapy from familiar surroundings. For some, this can make those first conversations feel a little easier.

Online counselling isn't necessarily better than working face-to-face — it's simply another way of accessing therapy. The therapeutic relationship remains central to the work, whichever setting you choose.

What Are the Benefits of Online Therapy?

More Flexibility

Online therapy can make regular sessions easier to fit around work, family life and other commitments. Without the need to travel, you may find it easier to protect that time for yourself and attend consistently.

Being in Your Own Space

Some people feel more at ease talking from familiar surroundings. Being in your own space can make therapy feel less daunting, particularly if this is your first experience of speaking to a therapist.

Greater Choice

Working online means you don't necessarily need to choose a therapist based solely on location. This can give you more opportunity to find someone whose experience and way of working feel right for you.

Continuity

Online sessions can also make it easier to continue therapy when circumstances change — for example, during particularly busy periods or when getting to an in-person appointment becomes difficult.

How Do I Start Online Therapy?

Starting therapy can feel like a big step, particularly if you have never spoken to a therapist before. You don't need to know exactly what you want to talk about or have everything worked out before you begin.

At Within Reach Therapy, we offer a free 15-minute initial consultation. This gives you an opportunity to talk briefly about what has brought you to therapy, ask any questions you may have and get a sense of whether working together feels right for you.

If you decide to continue, sessions usually take place at the same time each week, providing a regular and confidential space to explore whatever you are experiencing. This might include anxiety, addiction, grief, trauma, relationship difficulties, low self-esteem or simply a sense that something in your life needs to change.

Finding the right therapist matters. Qualifications and experience are important, but so is feeling that you can be yourself with the person sitting opposite you — even when that person is on a screen.

What to Expect in Online Therapy Sessions

Online therapy is much like meeting with a therapist in person. Sessions take place by secure video call, with the same focus on confidentiality, trust and building a therapeutic relationship where you feel able to talk openly.

You don't need to prepare anything before a session or arrive knowing exactly what you want to discuss. Some weeks you may come with something specific that has happened; at other times, we may explore feelings, relationships or patterns that have become more noticeable over time.

Our approach is integrative, so therapy isn't based around a fixed programme or a set of exercises that everyone follows. We draw on different therapeutic approaches depending on you, what you are experiencing and what feels most useful to explore.

Over time, therapy can provide an opportunity to understand yourself more deeply, recognise patterns that may be affecting you and explore different ways of relating to yourself and others.

Does Online Therapy Really Work?

It’s understandable to wonder whether talking to a therapist through a screen can feel as meaningful as sitting together in the same room. For many people, a strong therapeutic relationship can develop online just as it can in person.

What matters is less about whether therapy takes place online or face-to-face and more about whether you feel comfortable with your therapist, able to speak openly and understood within the relationship.

Online therapy won’t suit everyone. Some people prefer the separation that comes from leaving home and entering a dedicated therapy space, while others feel more comfortable talking from familiar surroundings. There is no right or wrong choice — it is about what works for you.

Privacy is also important. You will need somewhere reasonably private where you feel able to speak freely without being overheard or interrupted. We will also talk about confidentiality and how online sessions work before beginning therapy.

Is Online Therapy Right for You?

Choosing between online and in-person therapy is a personal decision. For some people, being able to talk from the comfort of home makes therapy easier to access and fit into everyday life. For others, having a separate physical space for therapy feels important.

Whichever you choose, finding a therapist you feel comfortable with matters. Therapy can involve talking about things that may be difficult, painful or deeply personal, so feeling able to be yourself within the therapeutic relationship is an important part of the process.

At Within Reach Therapy, we offer integrative therapy both online and in person in London. We work with adults experiencing a range of difficulties, including anxiety, addiction, trauma, grief and loss, relationship difficulties, low self-esteem and burnout.

If you're considering therapy but aren't sure whether online sessions are right for you, we offer a free 15-minute consultation where you can ask questions, talk briefly about what you're looking for and see whether working together feels right.
