Do I Have to Explain Who I Am in Therapy?

Starting therapy can feel exposing enough without also wondering whether you will have to explain or defend parts of who you are.

Your background, culture, race, sexuality, gender, faith, family, class, disability or life experiences can all shape the way you see yourself and the world around you. They can also affect how other people respond to you.

Therapy shouldn't require you to leave those parts of yourself at the door.

Feeling understood matters

A therapist may not share your background or have lived the same experiences as you. In fact, there will always be things about another person's experience that we cannot fully know.

What matters is being willing to listen, to be curious without making assumptions, and to recognise that people's difficulties don't exist in isolation from the lives they have lived.

Sometimes what brings someone to therapy is very personal. At other times, anxiety, low self-esteem, shame or feeling that you don't belong may be connected to experiences within families, communities, relationships, workplaces or wider society.

Those experiences deserve space too.

Inclusive therapy isn't one-size-fits-all

People don't all communicate, cope or make sense of their experiences in the same way. A way of working that feels comfortable for one person may feel completely wrong for somebody else.

At Within Reach Therapy, our integrative approach allows us to work with you as an individual rather than expecting you to fit a particular model of therapy.

That includes being aware of difference and being open to conversations about identity, culture, privilege, discrimination and belonging when they are important to you.

You should be able to bring your whole self

You don't need to have the right words. You don't need to educate your therapist. And you don't need to make parts of your experience more comfortable for somebody else.

A good therapeutic relationship should give you room to talk about what matters to you — including the things that may have been misunderstood, dismissed or difficult to speak about elsewhere.

Within Reach Therapy offers inclusive, integrative counselling for adults in London and online. If you're considering therapy, you can get in touch to arrange a free 15-minute introductory call.
